With the bye week here, the Nebraska football team is licking its wounds after two heartbreaking losses while trying to recover from a rash of injuries. While the players do that, the Husker coaches are getting some much-needed recruiting in.
Along those lines, head coach Matt Rhule is rumored to be heading to Louisiana in the next couple of days to talk to top 2027 tight end Ahmad Hudson again and continue working to flip him from LSU to NU.
Rhule’s visit to Ruston to see Ahmad Hudson is the latest effort to pry the talented star away from his home-state team. However, they’ve been working behind the scenes for months and got the tight end to come to Nebraska for an official visit for the Maryland game.
Last week, On3’s Steve Wiltfong reported that Hudson is still very, very high on the Huskers, even as he remains committed to Lane Kiffin and the Bayou Bengals.
Matt Rhule relentlessly pursues LSU commit Ahmad Hudson for Nebraska football
“Nebraska continues to make a real run at flipping elite LSU TE commit Ahmad Hudson, Wiltfong wrote. “This kid loves this place. He wanted to come here before he went to LSU.”
Hudson is a 5-star tight end in the 2027 recruiting class. The 6-foot-6.5, 239-pound tight end plays for Ruston High School in Ruston, Louisiana. He’s ranked as the No. 19 player in the 2027 class, the No. 1 player at his position and the No. 3 player in the state of Louisiana according to the latest 247 Composite Rankings.
Hudson has accumulated nearly 40 scholarship offers during his recruitment, including Nebraska, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, Missouri, Ole Miss, Louisiana Tech, and Grambling, among others.
As a junior at Ruston in 2025, Hudson was a standout offensive weapon, helping his team finish 11-3 and reach the Louisiana Division 1 Non-Select championship game. He was named the MVP of the title game after catching 6 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown. Previously, in his 2024 sophomore campaign, he caught 41 passes for 718 yards and 6 touchdowns.
What makes Hudson even more attractive to Nebraska is that he's not only a dominant tight end, but also one of the best centers in basketball. That’s also one of the ways Nebraska has managed to wedge itself in.
While LSU basketball head coach Will Wade has been iffy about whether he thinks he has a spot for Hudson, Nebraska basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg has made it clear he’d love for the athlete to play for his team, as well as Matt Rhule’s. For a while now, that’s been one reason analysts believe Nebraska still has a shot of flipping him.
At this point, LSU is still the winner, and it feels like if his visit to the Maryland game doesn’t knock him loose, he will almost certainly stay a Tiger. At the same time, Rhule and his staff are clearly not giving up and won’t until December. The last time they were this persistent about a recruit, they won a 5-star quarterback battle for Dylan Raiola.
