Nebraska Cornhuskers News: You should see them in a crown, losing Hardley Gilmore

The Nebraska Cornhuskers had a very good weekend across basketball, baseball and softball, even if football lost a wide receiver.

It’s been a bit of a tough spring for the Nebraska Cornhuskers athletic program. The basketball team missed the NCAA Tournament after spending most of the season being a shoo-in. Meanwhile, the baseball team has hit rough waters, especially in the Big Ten.

There have been some bright spots of late. Baseball finally found a way to win a series in conference and the softball team kept rolling. And the basketball team salvaged a late season collapse with a little run.

Go ahead and crown ‘em

The Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball team finished the careers of Brice Williams and Juwan Gary on a high note. Knocking off Arizona State, Georgetown, Boise State and UCF, the Huskers closed out the 2024-25 campaign with four straight wins.

In the process, Gary was named the CBC Tournament’s MVP. That was fitting considering he had one of his best games with the Cornhuskers on Sunday night as he scored 20 points, hauled down 8 rebounds and logged 2 steals. Gary played his best basketball towards the end of his college basketball career, scoring 20 or more points in five of the last seven games.

The four wins in the CBC got the Huskers a couple of hundred thousand dollars for NIL purposes while Fred Hoiberg won 20 games in back-to-back seasons.

Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball finally gets a Big Ten series win

After losses to Creighton and then Omaha, the Nebraska baseball team was reeling. Perhaps getting back to Big Ten play against someone who isn’t brand new to the conference was the magic bullet. The Huskers took two of three from Rutgers over the weekend, marking the first conference series win of the season.

NU won the first two games 10-5 and 8-5 before losing the Sunday game 7-5 as the Scarlet Knights narrowly avoided a sweep. Now 14-18 on the season and 4-8 in the B1G, NU will take on Kansas in a mid-week tilt before a massive series against the Iowa Hawkeyes, who currently sit in second place in the conference.

Softball keeps winning

While baseball is limping around this season, the softball team is very much not. Jordy Bahl and her compatriots took two of three from Iowa and improved to 28-10 on the season and 8-3 in the Big Ten. They also mercy ruled the Hawkeyes twice continuing a season where they often bludgeon their opponents.

Next up is Creighton and then a weekend series against Northwestern.

Hardley Gilmore gone

It wasn’t all good news this weekend. On Saturday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team announced that wide receiver Hardley Gilmore has left the program. It seems likely the transfer player could head back to Kentucky.
