When the Nebraska baseball team tries to save its season on Saturday morning, it will have more than Holy Cross to overcome. The Huskers are banged up and will undoubtedly be without one of their stars and almost certainly be without two more.

If any Cornhuskers fans were surprised at how much Will Bolt’s squad struggled on offense despite not facing Oklahoma’s best arms, the fact that they had not one, not two, but three starting offensive players sitting out the game played a big part.

Buettenback, Sanderson injuries leave Nebraska thin for Holy Cross elimination tilt

Before the Chapel Hill Regional began on Friday, Bolt delivered the bad news. The Nebraska baseball team would play without right fielder Max Buettenback, third baseman Rhett Stokes, and first baseman Case Sanderson. The team will likely be without all three players again on Saturday.

It’s a given that Overbeek is out for the season, with Bolt saying the third baseman suffered an “unfortunate” break in his foot on Huskers radio. Just why Buettenback is out wasn’t covered, but it was apparent he was injured in the Big Ten Tournament final when he ran down a fly ball that kept UCLA off the board in the early innings.

Directly after ending the inning, the right fielder hobbled off the field and left the game shortly after.

Buettenback and Sanderson are two of the best hitters on the team. The former hits .289 with 7 home runs, while the latter leads the Huskers in batting with a .318 average and 3 home runs. Stokes added another level to the defense of the team.

The Nebraska baseball team needs to find a way to bounce back despite those three being out after losing 7-4 to Oklahoma on Friday night. When they take on Holy Cross at 11 a.m. on Saturday, it’s win or go home for the season time.
