A Nebraska baseball season that got a second life thanks to a Big Ten Tournament title, is now in danger of coming to an end. The Huskers took on the Oklahoma Sooners on Friday night in a weather delayed second game of the Chapel Hill regional. Unfortunately, the extra prep time didn’t help.

A Sooners team that often relied on its pitching once again leaned on its strength, even if the man taking the mound has famously struggled in 2025.  Malachi Witherspoon entered the game just 3-8 on the year and looked like he might stumble again after facing off against the first few NU batters.

Loss to Oklahoma forces Nebraska into elimination clash with Holy Cross in Chapel Hill regional

Unfortunately, after Witherspoon got into and out of a jam in the first inning, the Nebraska baseball team didn’t really challenge again until it was much too late. Down 7-0 after seven innings, NU did rally for four runs in the top of the 8th. However, that was all the runs they could score as they went quietly in the ninth.

The Huskers opened the regional by using six pitchers. Starter Jackson Brockett was chased off after just 3.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. Caleb Clark allowed three unearned runs in 2.2 innings, with none of the other four pitchers going more than 0.2 innings for their appearances.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers’ season now comes down to an 11 a.m. game in the loser’s bracket against Holy Cross, who was defeated by the North Carolina Tar Heels, 4-0 in the first game of the Chapel Hill Regional.

North Carolina will take on Oklahoma in the winner’s bracket night cap. Should the Huskers beat Holy Cross, they’ll take on the loser of OU/UNC on Sunday morning in hopes of playing a second game later that day.

First thing is first, the Nebraska baseball team will need to win their loser’s bracket game to extend their season one more day.
