Iowa was a thorn in the side of Nebraska basketball more often than not this past season, and now Ben McCollum's team is poking the Huskers with a portal win over Ty'Reek Coleman. The former Illinois State guard visited Lincoln earlier this week, but on Friday, he committed to the Hawkeyes, setting up an interesting showdown next fall and winter.
As a freshman last season for the Redbirds, the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder from Aurora, Illinois, put up 10 points a game on 50.4% from the floor, 41.6% from 3-point range, and 70.2% from the free throw line, to go along with 2.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 0.9 steals over 22:42 minutes per contest across 35 games played.
Iowa steals a point guard target away from Nebraska
Coleman is a significant addition for McCollum and the Hawkeyes as they landed one of their top transfer portal targets. In addition to directly competing with Nebraska, the talented guard picked Iowa over Kansas State, Utah State, DePaul, and Oklahoma State. That he'll also have three years of eligibility left means McCollum can work on turnovers, the one area where Coleman struggled.
If there's anything that might blunt the pain of losing this recruiting battle, it's that Coleman's commitment came hours after the Huskers landed a point guard of their own in Trevan Leonhardt. It's possible that after getting Leonhardt, the Huskers were less willing to meet Coleman's asking price.
Ben McCollum's win shouldn't faze Fred Hoiberg and Nebraska basketball
Nebraska has also had plenty of success in the last few days through the Transfer Portal. On Saturday morning, Fred Hoiberg got his third commitment in two days and fourth of the offseason. The heater the Huskers are on might have been interrupted, but it certainly wasn't brought to a halt.
