Just as the transfer portal has opened, the Nebraska basketball team is now working on finding new players as well as finding a new assistant coach.
One of Fred Hoiberg’s top lieutenants, Adam Howard is on his way out of Lincoln after spending several seasons working with the guards and serving as the staff’s top recruiting ace. He heads off to North Carolina State to join Will Wade’s new staff just one day after Wade’s move from McNeese State was made official.
News of Howard leaving the Nebraska basketball program began circulating around social meda on Monday afternoon, just hours after the transfer portal opened. Howard’s departure marks the first change among Nebraska’s assistant coaches since he and Ernie Zeigler were hired after the 2021-22 season. Nate Loenser remains the longest tenured member of the staff, having joined NU in 2021.
Nebraska basketball suddenly on the search for new assistant coach
Before spending the last three seasons with the Huskers, Howard spent the previous four at South Alabama. He played for Western Kentucky from 2004 to 2008 and had coaching stints at Morehead State, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee and Troy.
Howard has been key to building the Nebraska basketball roster over the last few years and was expected to be key to that in the next few seasons. He was credited with bringing Juwan Gary to Lincoln in 2022 and he was the lead recruiter for 4-star small forward Aidan Chronister in the 2026 class.
The Nebraska basketball program just made it a bit harder on itself at just the wrong time.
