Nebraska takes next step in recruitment of potential Jamarques Lawrence replacement

The Nebraska basketball team has one addition in the fold through the Transfer Portal. However, as the Huskers work to secure several other players, it looks like they've moved on to Plan B for some positions. Granted, with as many players in the portal as there are, Chevalier "Ice" Emery is a talented backup plan.

The relationship between the Huskers and Emery is still in the early stages. Fred Hoiberg and some of the other NU coaches will talk to the Cleveland State guard over Zoom on Thursday, according to On3's Dushawn London. The next step, should the two sides decide they want to move forward, is to host Emery on campus.

Nebraska has already hosted several players since the portal opened last Tuesday. However, so far, the only commitment to come from those visits is stretch forward Sam Orme. However, the former Belmont star could soon be joined by ex-Boston College power forward Boden Kapke as several analysts predict he'll commit to the Huskers soon.

Emery has already had a storied college career. After leading Neenah High School to a state title, he signed with Merrimack. However, he only played in 15 games and averaged just 2.7 minutes as a freshman. That lack of involvement led him to transfer to the JUCO Dodge City Community College as a sophomore, where he averaged 17.4 points per game.

That led to an opportunity at Western Carolina, where he averaged 9.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists across 24.8 minutes, with 14 starts in 30 games. From there, he transferred to Cleveland State, where he spent the 2025-26 season.

While Emery looks like a potential Jamarques Lawrence replacement, shifting into Braden Frager's role might be a better fit. With Cleveland State, the 6-foot-0 guard averaged 12.7 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. While he appeared in 33 games, he started just one.

Should Nebraska look to lock down Ice Emery, they'll need to beat back some Major programs, including at least one Big Ten rival. Wisconsin is thought to want the former Cleveland State guard pretty badly.
