The rumblings and rumors surrounding Malachi Coleman got louder last week and as it turns out, they were accurate. The Nebraska football wide receiver officially announced he was entering the transfer portal when it opens in just over a week.

That’s the bad news. Matt Rhule delivered some even worse news when he made the announcement about Coleman and it underlined the seismic shift the college football world is about to undergo. In talking about the House v NCAA settlement that will set a roster cap for FBS teams next season, Rhule said he expects as many as 50 Huskers to entere the portal this offseason.

In regards to Coleman, the former four-star recruit and top-60 prospect in the 2023 cycle stepped in and was an immediate contributor last season. He finished his true freshman season with eight catches for 139 yards in 11 games played.

Nebraska football about to see flood of transfers

However, this year, Coleman hasn’t seen the field amid talk that the coaches wanted him to redshirt. It appears that he will indeed get that redshirt and still be a sophomore at whatever school he next calls home.

It’s expected that a vast majority of the 35-50 players who enter the portal will be walkons, but there will undoubtedly be several scholarship players who leave too as the Husker coaches try and make sense of who and what they need in the news 105 player roster limit world.

When thinking about where Coleman cold end up, it’s worth pointing out his initial commitment came amid a down to the wire between the Nebraska football team and the Colorado Buffaloes.
