Famed Nebraska football nemesis might be seeing the end of his career
With the Nebraska football team having qualified for a bowl last weekend, one of the nice side effects is that there won’t be any talk about head coach Matt Rhule being on the hotseat. The same can’t be said for dozens of head coaches around the sport. And then of course, there’s the guys who have already lost their jobs.
On Tuesday, that list of newly unemployed added one more in the form of North Carolina head coach Mack Brown. Brown has gone through a rough year for the Tarheels, even if they are sitting at 6-5 on the season. It’s likely that a recruiting approach that had UNC in the mid-60’s in rankings for the 2025 class played a bigger part than wins or and losses. Though some of those losses were extremely embarrassing.
While Nebraska football wasn’t slated to play Brown in the near future, it’s likely fans who remember the end of the Huskers run in the Big 12 won’t be too sad to see Brown’s career potentially come to a close. The former Texas Longhorns coach had a ridiculous level of success against NU during his time in Austin.
Nebraska football nemesis Mack Brown out of a job
The Cornhuskers and Longhorns locked horns eight times when Mack Brown was at the helm of UT. He compiled a record of 7-1 against NU.
Among those wins was the infamous “one-second game” where Ndamukong Suh dominated Colt McCoy and his teammates, but the Husker offense could only muster 10 points and lost on a last-second field goal.
That’s one of the reasons why Brown so frustrated Nebraska football fans. Of the seven wins he compiled, only one (31-7 in 2003) was by a margin of more than one score.
