When Carter Nelson surprised Nebraska football fans with pictures immediately following surgery in January, it's fair to say no one expected him to be the talk of the first day of fall camp.
When Nelson had to miss the spring practice session because of that surgery, there were plenty of people who wondered whether he'd be able to contribute to the Huskers this fall. However, last week at Big Ten Media Days, head coach Matt Rhule said the hybrid player was "full go" for practice. On Monday, Nelson showed that he is indeed ready to compete and contribute, and he's beefed up to try to better play throughout the season.
Lean-and-mean Carter Nelson emerges as early Nebraska football difference-maker at TE
One of the most consistent comments out of Monday's open practice for the Nebraska football program is that Carter Nelson "transformed" his body as he gets ready to try and win the starting tight end job.

This spring, Nelson was listed at 250 pounds, certainly not a lightweight by any stretch, but more of a tight end/wide receiver. This year, he's trying to make the move to more of a standard TE who will be a receiving threat as well, and in order to do that, he's reportedly shed about 10 pounds.
According to reports of those who saw him running routes, blocking defenders, and catching passes, it looks like he's made quite the move to become a more complete player.
Nelson was one of the best players at his position in the country in his recruiting class, and the Huskers have been quite excited to see what he can do at the next level.
So far, so good, as the in-state player was someone who stood out from the pack for the Nebraska football team as camp gets underway.
