The Nebraska football team has been more active in the transfer portal this year than since Matt Rhule arrived on campus. The activity has been on both ends of the portal, with the Huskers getting some additions and losing some players.
One of those additions arrived on Thursday when former California wide receiver Nyziah Hunter signed with the Huskers. It’s not outrageous to say that the freshman is a massive addition to the Nebraska football team.
He brings big stats in a short time to Nebraska football
In Hunter’s first year as a starter, he put up some pretty big numbers. The freshman hauled down 40 catches for for 578 yards and 5 touchdowns. Those numbers put him second on Cal this year in both catches and yards behind tight end Jack Endries.
He also led the team in touchdown catches by a decent margin. When you consider what the freshman receivers did for the Huskers this season, it’s clear that he would have a big impact had he been in Lincoln.
Hunter is an interesting combo of size and speed
Standing at 6-foot-2, and weighing in at 210 pounds, Hunter might be mistakenly identified as a possession receiver. However, he’s got very good speed that made him one of the top receivers in the transfer portal.
Hunter has some serious speed, as demonstrated by his 14.4 yards per catch, that included a 60-yard reception.
He makes the wide receiver room better immediately
With the loss of Jahmal Banks and Isaiah Neyor, as well as the transferring out of Malachi Coleman, there were some who were plenty worried about the wide receiver room for the Huskers in 2025. Obviously, Hunter isn’t the end-all and be-all solution, and it’s possible NU could take more receivers, but if he is the addition, then the room looks pretty good.
