Nebraska football fans still have a ton of uncertainty about the upcoming season, but they can take solace in Iowa continuing to lose the offseason. It’s true that a college football team cannot win a national championship during the offseason, but a team can definitely take some steps toward that goal. A team can also take some steps away from that goal and the Hawkeyes have been moonwalking away from championship dreams since the regular season ended.
At the center of Iowa’s move away from relevancy and competence has been its offensive coordinator, who happens to be the son of Iowa’s head coach. Brian Ferentz is probably one of the least popular coaches in the history of Iowa City. However, it’s safe to say that his performance during a press conference on Thursday somehow made him even less popular.
During that press conference, Ferentz really kicked things off when he said that the Iowa offense likely won’t see many changes in its approach from the last few years. That was already music to Nebraska football fans’ ears. But then, Brian Ferentz was asked if he had a message to Iowa fans who might be a bit frustrated to hear they might be getting more of the same in 2023.
His response? “I don’t have a message to them”
Over the last few years, the Hawkeyes have definitely been a thorn in Nebraska football’s side. There’s very little doubt they’ve been the better program over the last decade. But things started to change last year.
Iowa’s offense was abysmal. While Nebraska football was far from great, Mickey Joseph managed to forge quite a “last stand” to his Husker head coaching career by upending the Ferentz family and making sure Iowa didn’t win the division.
And now, Matt Rhule and company get to lead the Nebraska football team against an Iowa Hawkeyes that seem to be continuing the same mistakes that took them down in 2022. After years of the Cornhuskers being a hot mess, watching someone else wear that hat is refreshing.
