The football team is focusing on versatility. The baseball team is shaking up its rotation. Those stories and more in today’s Nebraska Cornhuskers news.

The name of the game for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team these days is versatility. It turns out that it’s much more than a slogan or something that Matt Rhule and company are pushing without following through. It appears that the coaching staff is honestly all about finding players that fit positions of need, even if they’re being moved to positions they haven’t really played before.

Defensive coordinator Tony White talked about both the need and desire to have versatility on the defensive side of the ball after practice on Thursday. Specifically, White mentioned AJ Rollins, a tight end for the Nebraska football team until this spring. However, he’s moved over to the defensive line, and it appears that’s where he’s going to stay.

The offense is also looking at versatility. During his meeting with the media, Nouredin Nouili shed a bit of light on that when he talked about how the offensive line positions haven’t been sorted out yet. There’s also talk about guys like Rahmir Johnson getting back into the mix. The bottom line is that the Nebraska Cornhuskers coaching staff is really dedicated to the idea of versatility.

Nebraska baseball shakes things up

It appears that Will Bolt is taking things seriously as the Huskers’ season enters the second half. While the baseball team is off to a solid start, record wise, there have been more than a few bad losses on the schedule. That includes a Tuesday night loss against Omaha for the second time this season. The tie that binds quite a few of the bad losses has been a pitching performance that was less than stellar.

In order to try and shake things up, Bolt has made some drastic changes to the Huskers’ rotation. This weekend against Northwestern, Emmett Olson holds onto the Friday starting spot. However, Saturday’s start will be taken by Jackson Brockett and Sunday’s starter is still TBD.

Jace Kominska has been the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ #2 starter all season and Will Walsh was the number three starter last Sunday.

Other Nebraska Cornhuskers news

  • It appears that during this spring session, the Huskers offensive line has been bonding quite well. So well in fact, that defensive line Stephon Wynn joked about it after practice on Thursday. “I will say one thing about our O-line is that they are a brotherhood. They go everywhere together. You just don’t see one of them by themself. They go as a pack.”
  • The new Big Ten Commissioner got one big endorsement on Thursday. Tim Brando said that Tony Petitti was someone who should have been hired by the Pac 12 because he was such a sharp mind.

Other Sports News

  • There’s been a lot of talk about the Pac 12 and what might happen to the conference in the near future. That talk included the idea that Colorado might leave it in order to rejoin the Big 12. Those rumors recently became so loud that CU’s athletic director took to Twitter to shoot them down.
  • Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets seemed like a done deal not all that long ago. New rumors hint that the Jets and Packers aren’t talking. That would be bad news for both franchises.
