The Nebraska football program staff has undergone quite a bit of transition since Matt Rhule took over as head coach.

There have been quite a few people coming in and quite a few going out. One of the biggest complaints early in the Rhule era was that he wasn’t retaining many people from the Nebraska football staff that picked up the pieces after Scott Frost was fired and kept the team going. There had been hope that guys like Mickey Joseph and Bill Busch would be retained in some capacity but that never came to be. As the dust settled, it was clear a few of the old guard would be kept on staff. Donovan Raiola was the only holdover from the on-field coaching staff but a few others were kept behind the scenes.

Those that survived the purge include one of the longest-tenured members of the Nebraska football staff. A man that coached under Tom Osborne and Frank Solich and just about every head coach since. It turns out that Ron Brown has been brought back as part of what is best described as the infrastructure staff of Rhule’s tenure. However, he does have a new title of Director of Player Support & Outreach.

Brown has been around the Nebraska football program in some capacity since 1987. He did take a couple of leaves of absence when Bill Callahan and Mike Riley were in charge, but he never completely cut ties with the Huskers.

Brown had a couple of different positions under the last head coach, Scott Frost. He mostly served behind the scenes as an offensive analyst. However, he did become a position coach for a short period after Frost fired most of his offensive staff toward the end of the 2021 season.

He then moved back to his off-field position when Frost made his new hires over the winter of 2021 and 2022.

Just what the position of Director of Player Support & Outreach isn’t entirely clear, though it’s not hard to imagine he’ll be assisting in both recruiting aspects as well as a shoulder to lean on for current members of the Nebraska football roster.
