For the Nebraska football team and Nebraska football faithful, three letters have become a big part of their lives. NIL.

Standing for Name, Image, and Likeness rights, NIL is in fact a very big part of the college sports world in general. While it’s all over these days, Nebraska was actually one of the first states to really embrace what NIL meant for college athletes.

With that in mind, it should surprise no one that one of the newest and potentially biggest collectives around the country is starting to really spin up. The 1890 Initiative NIL Collective came about earlier this fall, though the people behind it had been relatively silent.

On Friday afternoon, the organization announced what appears to be its first contracts with a current Nebraska football player. Now the big question is going to be just what kind of a deal Ty Robinson got himself and what it means for his future.

The 1890 Initiative launched in October 2022 and is currently being spearheaded by Matt Davison. While there are some Nebraska football fans who would rather he not have a ton of contact with a Matt Rhule led administration.

Matt Davison helping Nebraska Football in new ways

More than a few people celebrated the day it was announced he was parting way with the athletic department. Once a hero of Nebraska football faithful, his part in bringing Scott Frost to Lincoln is no longer seen as much of a positive. In fact, some out there believe that he played an even bigger part in Frost getting a little too complacent despite the losses piling up.

However, Davison can certainly redeem himself should the 1890 Initiative NIL Collective end up paying real dividends. It’s clear that college sports is going to be awash in cash both today and in the foreseeable future. The Nebraska football team having it’s own NIL apparatus is only a good thing with that in mind.
