Former Nebraska football star wonders if Matt Davison should ‘get a pass’

Not long after Scott Frost was relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Nebraska football team, people started talking about what went wrong during his term. It took no time at all for stories that claimed the Husker head man was not always as dedicated to the job as some might have hoped. But now, at least one former Cornhusker star is wondering whether Frost is the only one who should be catching heat.

Clester Johnson, a wide receiver for the Nebraska football team from 1993 to 1995 has some thoughts about the aftermath of the Scott Frost firing. Right at the top of the list apparently, is why there hasn’t been more talk about Matt Davison.

“I haven’t really heard it from old media they know who they are-Can we get Matt Davisons perspective on the ups and downs of Nebraska football,” Johnson wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.  “Or he just get a pass? What could we have done better? Etc.”

He went on to say that “inquiring minds want to know,” and then talked about how when the stuff hits the fan, certain people always go running.

Johnson isn’t alone in thinking that it’s high time to hear from Davison. The former receiver, who was on the receiving end of “the catch” from Scott Frost in that famous game against Missouri in 1997 was a color analyst for the Nebraska football team prior to Frost’s arrival as Husker head coach.

It’s well known that Davison played a very big part in his former quarterback coming back to Lincoln to try and turn around the Nebraska football program. Not long after Frost was hired, Davison was given a position in the athletic department. While his friend has since been fired, it appears Davison is keeping his job in the booth and in the department.

Some of the rumors surrounding the antics of the last 4+ years also involve the now-fired head coach spending a bit too much time on the golf course or engaging in other kinds of fun and frivolities when his focus should have been on football. Since the talk about what went wrong started surfacing, there were more than a few fingers pointing at a certain member of the Nebraska football athletic department as someone who could even be described as a bad influence on the “Golden Boy” during his return.

While Johnson might have gotten the ball rolling, it appears he’s not the only “inquiring mind” when it comes to hearing from, or about Davison in the aftermath of the Huskers’ current reshuffling.

Some Cornhusker fans soon started voicing their own feelings about the situation. And then some other former Nebraska football stars jumped into the debate as well.

Johnson went on to explain just why he felt like the focus on the Nebraska football team’s problems should include a look at certain people in the department.

"What I know if a player was closely connected to as much controversy as this it would be a major story. Why doesn’t he explain some things and clear up some questions people have? Like you said no one should get a pass!"

As of now, it appears that athletic director Trev Alberts is fine keeping Davison where he is, while he largely avoids the media spotlight. One has to wonder how long the general public will allow that to continue. Or allow him to continue being a part of the Nebraska football administration.
