Any hope that Tristan Gebbia wouldn’t leave the Nebraska football team were dashed on the rocks on Tuesday morning.
Close the door on any talk of Tristan Gebbia having a change of heart. The Nebraska football team announced Tuesday morning Scott Frost has okayed the release of the quarterback from his scholarship.
There was a bit of hope by some (okay me) that Gebbia might go the way of Jordy Tshimanga. The former Nebraska basketball center asked for his release back in December, but Tim Miles was able to talk him into staying.
He stayed until this summer. Has Scott Frost been able to do the same, the Huskers would have at least had two scholarship quarterbacks on the active roster.
It turns out that Gebbia wasn’t going to be swayed. It’s not entirely sure how hard Frost was willing to work to sway him. Hopefully, it’s all for the best.
It is interesting to note this is now the third quarterback to leave the Cornhuskers since Scott Frost arrived. Only walkon Andrew Bunch is a signal caller left over from the Mike Riley era.
Tanner Lee decided to go pro a year early. Patrick O’Brien is sitting out 2018 in order to play for Colorado State in 2019. Now Gebbia is on the hunt for a new school.
It’s important to realize this is the kind of situation where it’s possible no one was in the wrong. Frost and the coaching staff made no bones about wanting a dual-threat quarterback under center.
Going after Martinez was the first warning flare to Gebbia. Going after Luke McCaffrey was the second.
Did Gebbia see the writing on the wall? Did he realize if he didn’t win the starting job this year, there was little chance he’d ever win it?
That thought process seems more likely than not. It’s important to note that while we all want the players to put Nebraska football first when they are on the field, these guys have to think of their own lives and their own careers as well. Tristan Gebbia and the Huskers both appear to think he’ll be better off elsewhere.
