Nebraska recruiting cannot win them all. With one 2019 recruit locked up at quarterback, this prospect was likely always headed elsewhere.

Michael Johnson was once perhaps the top quarterback target on the board when it came to Nebraska recruiting. After Luke McCaffrey committed to the Huskers, things changed.

There was a time when Johnson seemed quite excited about Scott Frost. He even called him an offensive legend. It appears that the top prospect out of Oregon cooled a bit on the former Ducks’ assistant as the recruiting cycle went along.

Johnson had been taking a number of official visits during the early part of the summer. The quarterback took official visits to North Carolina State, Florida State, and Miami in June.

He also took in the sites in Happy Valley and apparently really liked what he saw as he is now another Nittany Lion commit. In addition to being the top player in the state of Oregon according to 247Sports, he’s also the sixth-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the entire 2019 class.

Ranked as the 259th best player in the class, Johnson wasn’t an elite prospect but he is one Frost and company were hoping would eventually end up in Lincoln. Losing him to Penn State brings a little bit of extra sting.

Already having a quarterback locked in for this class takes a bit of a bite out of the loss for Nebraska recruiting. Having their 2020 quarterback in the fold helps as well.

It is, of course, possible that Michael Johnson might change his mind before he signs on the dotted line. At this point, it does appear as though the Nebraska football team is out of the running for the quarterback.
