Nebraska recruiting is on a kind of hot-streak it hasn’t seen in decades. The Huskers got a fifth commit in less than a week.

Nebraska recruiting got another big win on Thursday night. 2020 quarterback Logan Smothers announced he had officially committed to the Cornhuskers.

The announcement came just hours after Smothers’ father tweeted out that he was excited about getting to see Scott Frost and company again. Smothers senior also made it clear that the whole family was in attendance and that was likely the icing on the cake.

Logan had been saying nothing but good things about the Huskers for a few months now. Despite not being able to sign on the dotted line until late 2019 at the earliest, there had been signs he might commit much sooner than that.

A late July commit still comes as a bit of a surprise, if only because it means the Nebraska football team already has their top targets for 2019 and 2020 locked down. Not only is the pressure off the players, but the pressure at least to some degree is off the coaches at this point.

Smothers is a dual-threat quarterback out of Alabama. 247Sports has the athlete already ranked as the number 12 dual-threat quarterback in the entire class. He’s also ranked as the 19th best player overall in Alabama.

While Smothers only had one Power 5 offer (the Nebraska football team) he was certainly getting more attention as the weeks went on. He also camped with Alabama and Ohio State.

It’s a safe bet that as the recruiting cycles move forward, Smothers is going to be pursued by bigger and better schools. All indications are that it might not matter.

Logan Smothers and the Smothers family seem to have legitimately fallen in love with the Nebraska football team and its coaches. Now the Nebraska recruiting efforts at the quarterback position can turn all the attention on the top 2021 quarterback target, who just happens to be a Husker legacy case.
