One of the best rush ends for the Nebraska football team in the last two decades is officially cleared to play in the NFL on a provisional basis.

Former Nebraska football star Randy Gregory is likely hoping this is the beginning of a happy ending. The Dallas Cowboys defender has been officially reinstated by the NFL.

The reinstatement, which is provisional, is effective immediately and means he can join his team when they officially start training camp next week. Despite being let back into the league, there are a few more hurdles to clear.

According to Herbie Toepe of NFL.com, Gregory can attend meetings and conditioning work, but he won’t be allowed into practices right away. In order to practice, he’ll have to show that he is abiding by the provisional return.

Among the factors that will determine if he abiding by those rules, will be the “clinical resources” he’ll be taking advantage of in Dallas. “I’ve never been more proud of any individual in my life,” Gregory’s attorney Daniel Moskowitz said in a statement, via NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. “I’m very excited for Randy and his daughter and the rest of the his family.”

The wheels for this particular return went into motion all the way back in March of this year. Last month the defensive lineman apparently was hearing good things about his chances, leading him to tweet out some positive vibes.

This weekend, the talk that Gregory would be allowed back got even stronger. Now he is indeed well on his way to stepping on the football field for the first time in a long time.

Gregory was a second-round pick of the Cowboys in 2015. Issues with substance abuse led to him playing just two games in 2016 and missing the entire season in 2017. Randy Gregory’s return will likely be very welcome by the Dallas Cowboys.

While the former Nebraska football star is close to being all the way back, the Cowboys have lost another defensive lineman, David Irving for the first four games of the 2018 season, also due to violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
