Former Nebraska football star Richie Incognito announced his retirement last week. Over the weekend, the offensive lineman announced he was coming back.

Richie Incognito has always known how to draw attention to himself. Whether that’s a good thing, or a bad thing when it comes to the former Nebraska football star is anyone’s guess.

The offensive lineman was at it again last week. On April 10, Incognito told Buffalo Bills beat reporter Vic Carucci that he was hanging up the spikes.

At that time, Incognito said he was done and that, “It’s been a long career. Went to the doctor. My liver and kidneys are shutting down. The stress is killing me. It’s just about doing what’s right. I just want to be in the Hall of Fame.”

Four days later, Incognito took to his official Twitter account to announce he wasn’t going to end his career just yet. In a tweet with the hashtag #madeyalook, he tweeted to the Bills PR department that it was a “short-lived retirement” and that he was reporting on Monday for the beginning of the offseason program.

It should be noted that Incognito had never really followed up reports that he was done by turning in his paperwork. It’s entirely possible on the day he spoke to Carucci he was in fact, ready to call it quits.

When a player has been around as long as the former Husker has, there is a definite back and forth that goes on. The guys love the game to a degree that makes it hard to say they’re done.

The damage that is done to their bodies tends to be the deciding factor. The damage Incognito says has been done to his was apparently not extensive enough to convince him it was time after all.

The interesting thing to watch now will be to see how long the former Nebraska football product is “back.” Once guys start talking about their health and start talking about retirement, that retirement usually comes sooner rather than later.
