Nebraska football fans did not have a good Saturday. Their team lost big again and Scott Frost officially denied rumors he was close to coming to Lincoln.

After Nebraska football fans watched Scott Frost coach his team to another win in an undefeated season, they watched the Huskers lose another game in historic fashion. Even worse than the loss for some, was the official denial Frost issued after his game.

Frost was asked point blank whether the rumors that he had basically signed a deal were true. Frost responded that the rumor was “totally false.”

For those looking to parse the denial, Frost actually said the rumor that he had signed a deal was false. While that response is likely accurate, it doesn’t mean the two sides aren’t talking.

Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire. When applying that adage to the Huskers situation, we’ve seen smoke in the form of reports talking about how Bill Moos has reached out to UCF and told them Nebraska is interested in their head coach.

Husker fans want to believe the fact that Frost is coming to Nebraska that they are actually going to Central Florida games and letting him know how bad they want him.  The man behind the latest rumor went back to Twitter on Saturday to make sure everyone knew he stood by his assertions.

Lars Anderson isn’t the usual rumor monger. He spent 20 years at Sports Illustrated, writes about sports, including a new book with Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and teaches journalism at the University of Alabama.

For his part, Anderson still believes the two sides are very close. He is also pegging Frost to the Huskers as all but a done deal no matter what the terms of the contract are.

It’s not surprising that Scott Frost would deny the reports. It’s not surprising that the Nebraska football team would be completely silent on this issue while Mike Riley is still employed here. As was the case before this rumor started, Husker fans are going to have to play the waiting game.
