The match made in Nebraska football fans’ heaven appears closer than ever.

While Bill Moos was telling people that he believes Mike Riley deserves to finish out the year as the Nebraska football team’s head coach, he’s apparently been making plans for “right after.” Adam Rittenberg is reporting that the Huskers have reached out to Central Florida and made it clear they will be going after Scott Frost when they have an opening.

Rittenberg is one of ESPN’s top college football analysts and would have no reason to make a rumor like this up out of thin air. The only thing that makes the report somewhat unseemly is that fact that the Cornhuskers won’t have an opening for a few more weeks.

It’s been an open secret that Moos has had his eyes on Frost since it became apparent that Riley was likely to be departing Lincoln after the season. It’s been no secret at all that a majority of Husker fans have been wanting Frost since his UCF Knights became the juggernaut of the AAC.

So what does this mean going forward? If Moos has indeed made it clear they are courting Frost, it would stand to reason the University believes he would come here. While some have started to worry a program like Florida might snap the former Husker quarterback up, the Gators are rumored to be looking at more established coaches like Dan Mullen and Chip Kelly.

That doesn’t mean there haven’t been rumors Frost could be SEC-bound, but the tea leaves in Gainesville have been telling the story of a different coach for a while now. Tennesee is also looking for a new head man, but Frost’s name has never seriously been mentioned for that spot.

Those who know the UCF coach believe he’d be more than willing to come here if given the right opportunity. With reports that the Nebraska football team is definitely interested, it seems only a matter of time. That time is likely a few days after Thanksgiving.
