I think it’s safe to say that whenever the conversation of an alternate Nebraska football uniform’s is brought up, the Husker faithful are never shy of giving an opinion. For the fourth consecutive year now, the Huskers have added an alternate uniform. As expected, the unveiling was met with mixed opinions.

Not everyone was pleased with the newest alternate uniform and that was to be expected. When you have a football program steeped in such rich tradition as Nebraska, it’s hard for some fans to wrap their minds around the fact that a gimmick uniform is needed.
However, the times have changed and whether you or I like it, the alternate uniforms are apparently here to stay.I myself, was a little bit skeptical about the unveiling of the new uniforms, but that is mainly due to the fact that I thought last year’s red on red uniform’s were my least favorite to this date.
With that said, my overall reaction this year wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, yet the black jersey’s matched with black pant’s isn’t all that appealing to me. Then again, I’m not a young High School recruit whose attention is trying to be grabbed neither.

The black matte helmet with the red N and red facemask is a nice touch and probably my favorite part of the uniform. It’s a lot easier on the eyes than the 2012 glossy black helmets.
Of the alternate helmets being used, I would have to put this one second, just behind the 2013 white helmet used for the UCLA game.
The black jersey with what appears to look like the tread on a tire looks good, especially with the red numbers outlined in white.
The red stripes on the sleeves are fine, but I would’ve liked to see them incorporate a little more white on the jersey and white stripes outlined in red would’ve been a little bit better looking. My favorite part of the jersey is the way they incorporated the word “Huskers” on the side. Overall, I put them first as my favorite, just ahead the 2013 black jersey’s worn against UCLA.
The black pants are fine by themselves, but paired with the black jersey’s, is just a bit too much black for me. Again, there wasn’t any effort to incorporate any white into the uniform. I really like the red stripes down the side with the red N sandwiched in between. I just think this look would stand out more and look better on white pants. It just looks a little over the top, mixed in with the black pants.

The socks kind of fit with the uniform and for them, I can go either way on. They do not make or break the uniform in any way to me.
The white shoes fit in well with the solid black uniform, they add just a little more value to the uniform than the socks do. I really like the undershirt and the large N that is stamped across the front. However, it’s an undershirt and only an added touch for the players to wear under their shoulder pads.
Overall, I think the uniform ranks just behind that of the 2013 black on white uniform and ahead of the 2012 red on red uniforms worn against Wisconsin. By far my least favorite uniform of the 4, was last year’s solid red version that was worn against Illinois.
If I wasn’t such a die-hard fan of the Cornhuskers, I would have a very hard time trying to figure out who each player was from my TV. Well, the alternate uniform debate will continue to carry on and this was just my opinion on it. Get ready folks, as the summer starts winding down, football season will be here soon. GO BIG RED!
