The Nebraska women’s basketball team lost for the third time this season to Iowa, 74-65, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at Sears Centre Arena. The Huskers end the regular season with a 21-10 overall record and post a 10-8 Big Ten record.

After their stellar play on Thursday afternoon in defeating Illinois, the Big Red needed to maintain a high level of execution against the Hawkeyes. From the opening tip, the first six minutes were frenzied. Nebraska made nine of its first 11 shots from the floor to take a 20-17 lead. After that, it slowly fell apart. The Hawkeyes outscored the Huskers 17-6 over the next 11 minutes to take the lead at 34-26.

Complicating matters, the Huskers, who normally commit few fouls in the first half, got into foul trouble quickly. Four of the starters – Cady, Laudermill, Jeffery and Romeo were all whistled for two fouls apiece before halftime. Struggling to find offense, the Huskers managed to take just a three point deficit into the locker room at halftime, 36-33.

The Iowa Hawkeyes came out of the locker room energized and went on the attack immediately to begin the second half. Struggling to get their shots to drop, the Huskers just couldn’t slow down the shooters from Iowa City. With all the momentum, Iowa went on a 11-0 run to widen their lead at 53-38 with 13:56 left.

One thing that can be said of this Nebraska Cornhusker team is they are fighters. They battle to the very end. As they were finding some offense, they were also committing more fouls. The Huskers managed to cut the deficit to seven points several times only to have Iowa come storming back. The closest the Big Red would get was 70-65 with about two minutes left in the game. Iowa would secure their victory earning four points at the charity stripe in the last moments of the game.

More from Nebraska Women's Basketball

Nebraska had a good year considering all the injuries and illness. Sure, they didn’t win the Big Ten regular season nor could they defend their 2014 Big Ten tournament crown. However, the big dance awaits. Nebraska will find out if it makes the NCAA Tournament during the Selection Show on Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m. on ESPN. Nothing is ever guaranteed but with their 21-10 record, they should receive an invitation. Stay tuned for more updates and as always, GO BIG RED!!
