Husker Rifle is busy preparing for their postseason. Their first stop is NCAA Qualifiers after a couple weeks off of duals. We caught up with the ladies who give “10” a whole other meaning. You’ve previously read up on sophomores Lauren Phillips, Rachel Martin and Jaycee Carter)

Junior Maggie Mical (her given name is Magdalena) was actually born in Poland but immigrated with her family (Mom, Dad and 4 siblings) to the US in 2006, and grew up in Florida. Her parents don’t get to visit very much due to the distance and the fact there are still 4 of her siblings to take care of in Clearwater. There is a little bit of an accent in her voice but not one you would pick up right away.
After college she intends to earn her way to become an art director in an advertising agency to help brands become top notch. She is majoring in advertising and French. Mical also speaks 3 different languages: English, Polish and French.
I asked her what the reaction is from people when they find out she is on the Husker Rifle team. “Usually they either love it or hate it. But they are excited to find out you do it. My older sister, Maria did pistol competition in Poland and she got me into it. I was more into dancing but I broke my leg. Once I started with the Junior Rifle Club where the pistol club was my competitive drive took over.”

During the summer, Maggie works as a intern in marketing programs and coaches high school kids in summer camps for marksmanship. She enjoys helping them better their strengths on the range. She said, “it’s cool to see teams come together and win.” While she’s at school they continue to stay in touch with her and report their progress.
Favorite Gun: She said she really doesn’t have one although her Dad owns a lot.

As for her competition day ritual, Maggie said, “When I wake up I get up a little earlier so I can work on my hair and it helps me to get focused on something else. Then I’ll listen to music, either EDM or Deep House, basically electronic music and chat with my teammates.”
Favorite Movie: Ice Age 3. She prefers popcorn over candy, and the theater over renting.
Favorite shooting venue: At the local Florida range back at home, the Wyoming Antelope Club.
Best shooting moment: “It was actually just 2 weeks ago in a scrimmage. It was my personal best in smallbore. I shot a 581. It felt great.”
Favorite sports persona: It would probably have to be Kelsey Robinson, a former Husker volleyball player. She was always a powerhouse on the court.

I asked her if there was anything she would want me to relate to the readers. Maggie said, “I’m fortunate because I think our college is one of the best. Nebraska really succeeds in all their programs for their athletes.”
Funny fact (something that made me giggle): Q: What other sports do you like to do for exercise? A: I like to do cardio things for the stamina and to mentally prepare myself. You have to keep pushing yourself. I like to stay positive so I do jogging. (and as a really big grin came over her face) I really love to swim but it’s hard to do that in Nebraska in the winter.
