National Recruit Signing Day is a special day for college football all across America. Teams across the nation are celebrating their recruiting success and head coaches are preparing for press conferences and recruiting events to celebrate with their fans. Nebraska Cornhusker Head Coach Mike Riley is no different. His press conference is scheduled for 2:00 pm signing day. He’s also preparing for the Nebraska Football National Signing Day Party scheduled for  6:00 pm signing day. National Recruit Signing Day is special to Husker Nation as we get an official look at what players we will get to see don the Husker uniform and represent BIG RED on the football battlefield.

National Signing Day 2015

Coach Mike Riley worked diligently to shore up the commitments of 4 athletes who intended on enrolling early at Nebraska. His efforts paid off as 3 of the 4 early enrollees are defensive backs and all 3 of them still chose the Big Red. They have been attending classes at UNL and have been participating in the Husker winter conditioning.

Cornerback Eric Lee was the 1st of the the 3 to commit to the Huskers. He is rated a 4 star player and his recruiting coach was Charlton Warren. The 2nd of the 3 to commit to the Huskers was Cornerback Avery Anderson. He too is rated a 4 star player and Charlton Warren recruited him as well. The final defensive back of the class is safety Aaron Williams. He is rated a 3 star player and Charlton Warren was his recruiting coach as well. Coach Warren is the only coach retained from the Bo Pelini era and it has been proven a valuable decision to retain him on his staff. If he hadn’t, it’s possible that any one of these 3 defensive backs could have landed elsewhere.

The new DBs will have plenty of experienced coaches bringing them along at Nebraska. They will learn under Defensive Coordinator Mark Banker, as well as their position coach Charlton Warren. I would expect to at least 1 making their way to play on special teams at some point under Bruce Reed. I am sure the other defensive coaches and strength coaches will also have a say in their development.

More from Nebraska Cornhuskers News

Although he is the lowest rated defensive back of the 3, Aaron Williams might have the best chance of early playing time should he come in and prove himself as the safety position is not as stacked as the CB position. Currently there are 3 other scholarship safeties playing for the Huskers, juniors Leroy Alexander and Nathan Gerry. The only other scholarship safety is sophomore Kieron Williams.

As far as the Cornerback position, Lee and Anderson will need to have stellar fall camps to earn playing time. Currently there are eight other scholarship cornerbacks on the roster for the Huskers. They are seniors Daniel Davie, Jonathan Rose, and Byerson Cockrell, junior Charles Jackson, sophomores Boaz Joseph, Chris Jones, and Josh Kalu, and red-shirt freshman Trai Mosley. It will be tough for them to earn time on the field, but both are very capable of doing so. Until then, let us enjoy the Spring competition they will partake in along with the April 11th Spring Game, coincidentally Spring Game tickets went on sale today and were up around 20,000 by lunchtime. It is not that far off!  Go Big Red!
