Husker Rifle is busy preparing for their postseason. Their first stop is NCAA Qualifiers after a couple weeks off of duals. We caught up with the ladies who give “10” a whole other meaning. (See also Lauren Phillips and Rachel Martin)

Sophomore Jaycee Carter grew up on a farm in Northern California and was driving a tractor by age 10. Her whole family is “outdoorsy” and like to hunt and fish. Jaycee really likes to rodeo as well. She has a little brother named Clay.

After college she intends on utilizing her Husker Ag Business and Marketing degree in the industry of commodity marketing. She’s now sure how the shooting will figure into things at this point.

I asked her what the reaction is from people when they find out she is on the Rifle team.

"They are either really excited and interested, or shocked because no one knows we have a team or that it’s even an NCAA sport. I love to be asked questions about it though. One time someone asked if the leather outfits were bulletproof."

When she is back home, Jaycee enjoys working on the ranch. She still practices with her high school shooting team and dabbles in some barrel racing.

Favorite Gun: She said her favorite is a 20 gauge Ithaca shotgun. It was her father’s first gun and the one he used to teach her and her brother to shoot. Her favorite competition rifle is her air rifle.

As for her competition day ritual, Jaycee said, “I start my day with oatmeal in the morning and some kind of fruit. I just think it helps me. Then my headphones with whatever music of the day comes up. I sometimes write in my journal and about my goals. I talk to coach right before I go to the line.

Favorite Movie: Remember the Titans because I love how the team comes together and they all have the same goal. And guys singing in it is adorable. She prefers popcorn over candy, and renting rather than the theater because you can have friends over.

Favorite shooting venue: “The Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, CO. It’s not the range really, it’s the fact that it was the Olympics and that inspires you to achieve excellence.”

Best shooting moment: “It was in high school, junior year in a match competition. It was an international standing match in air rifle competition. It was the first time that everything came together in one match, from beginning to end. It all clicked. And my coach had said, ‘I made it. Look at the college scores.’ I was never that stand out who did it naturally. But that was the first day it really clicked.”

Favorite sports person: It would probably be the Husker softball team. We have a good camaraderie with that group of girls and really learn a lot from each other.

I asked her if there was anything she would want me to relate to the readers. Jaycee said, “I’m fortunate. I have always had an amazing supportive group of parents, grandparents, and high school coaches. Now I have the athletic department and the coaches to add to my team of supporters. I’m so thankful to have them all in my life.

Funny fact (something that made me giggle): Q: What other sport do you play? A: A bunch of us play some sand volleyball for fun. It’s not about being the best spiker or libero, it’s more about having fun. Half the time we just end up in the sand laughing.

We will be keeping up with the ladies once they get to Murray, Kentucky and let you know of their progress. Jaycee, like all the other ladies, competes in Smallbore and Air Rifle. In the meantime, GO BIG RED!!!
