Huskers grab a road victory at Minnesota

No. 7 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team took their dynamic routines on the road and celebrated a WIN against the Minnesota Gophers (3-2, 2-1 Big Ten) Saturday night. Husker gymnasts demonstrated consistency and season-best performances to outscore Minnesota 197.075 – 196.675.

Nebraska began the meet on bars with a team score of 49.125. Jessie DeZiel led the way tying her season high score of a 9.90. Grace Williams posted a career high 9.85. Strong performances by the remainder of the squad combined to a team total of 49.125. Minnesota started on vault, led by Lindsay Mable with 9.90. A team score of 49.15 gave the Gophers a slim lead.

Nebraska’s vault performances and a team score of 49.425 allowed the Huskers to grab the lead. Jessie DeZiel scored a strong 9.925, with Jennie Laeng earning a new season-best 9.90. Minnesota earned 49.00 on bars to increase their team score to a 98.15 after two rotations. Once again, Lindsay Mable led the Gophers with a 9.875 while Cierra Tomson scored a close second with 9.85.


NU moved to the floor and all the Husker gymnasts posted a score of 9.8+. DeZiel and Blanske tied for the lead with identical 9.875’s. At the conclusion of the floor rotation, the Huskers posted a 49.225 team score. The Gophers scored a 49.125 team total on beam. Mable earned the highest marks of her teammates with a 9.925 After 3 rotations, the Huskers held a lead of 147.775 to the Gophers’ 147.275.

Nebraska saved their best for last on the balance beam. Jennie Lauer had a near perfect performance that earned her a season-high 9.925, tying her for 1st! Hollie Blanske came in a close second with 9.875, and DeZiel placing third with a 9.85. An impressive performance once again on the beam by the Huskers placed them confidently in the lead over Minnesota. The Gophers ended their evening on floor with a 49.400. Mable posted a 9.975 and Tomson earned a 9.90. Minnesota finished with a 196.675, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Huskers.

senior Jessie DeZiel and Minnesota’s Lindsay Mable (last week’s Big Ten Gymnast of the Week) led their squads through spirited competition during the meet. They were tied in the All-Around competition after 3 rotations.

DeZiel

won the vault title with a 9.925 and also won the bars with a 9.90. She would finish in 2nd place in the All-Around competition (39.550). Mable, for the 5th time this season, scored a 9.975 to win the floor title while tying Nebraska’s Jennifer Lauer for the beam title with a score of 9.925. Mable’s All-Around score (39.675) was her career best and garnered her the All-Around crown for the meet.

Huskers go on the road to Los Angeles, Calif. next weekend for their final regular-season competition on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. The quad meet will see the No. 7 ranked Cornhuskers take on  No. 13 ranked UCLA, along with Sacramento State and Bridgeport.
