Former Nebraska football wide receiver Trey Palmer wasn't without a job for long. Now he gets the chance to stand out with a new team and jump-start his NFL career.

Palmer was released by the Tampa Bay Bucs on Tuesday. Palmer didn't have a fantastic year in 2024, but in his two seasons with the NFL team, he did show that he was a weapon the team could turn to when needed. However, as Tampa had to cut its roster down to 53 by the deadline, he became a casualty of the numbers game.

This roster move gives a Nebraska favorite a reboot

The former Nebraska football star found himself a free agent despite trade discussions that circulated during the offseason. When they couldn't find a partner, the team ultimately chose the waiver route instead. It was that move that the New Orleans were waiting to pounce on. Just one day later, they added Palmer to their roster.

Palmer joins Devaughn Vele as a new addition to a receiving corps that also includes Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Cedrick Wilson, Brandin Cooks, and Mason Tipton. He'll be yet another weapon that newly appointed starting quarterback Spencer Rattler will have to use as he tries to forge a winning season despite few analysts giving the Saints much of a chance of winning many games.

Trey Palmer recorded 51 catches for 557 yards and four touchdowns for the Buccaneers over the last two seasons. His rookie season was easily his best, hauling down 39 catches for 385 yards and 3 TDs.

Those numbers followed a record-breaking season in his only year with the Nebraska football team. In 2022, he had 71 receptions for 1,043 yards and 9 touchdowns.
