The Scott Frost of the NFL has officially been fired after Thanksgiving disaster
On Friday morning, the Chicago Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus. In the process, the coaching career of the NFL version of Scott Frost hit a pretty big bump in the road. As it turns out, Nebraska football fans could have told the Bears they were foolish to have waited this long.
Over the years, I've compared several bad coaches to the one who ran the Huskers for at least a season too long. But Eberflus might be the best comparison of the bunch, at least when talking about pro coaches.
Like the former Nebraska football head coach, the now-former Bears head honcho had one thing that plagued him more than any other (aside from being a lousy coach): He could not win close games.
Nebraska football nation can feel Bears fans' pain thanks to Scott Frost
Thanksgiving Day was very obviously the final straw for Chicago. Eberflus' inability to call a time-out with 30 seconds left in the game thwarted the Bears' comeback attempt. They lost by 3 after spending most of the day looking like they would get blown out.
Nebraska fans remember those days from the Scott Frost era. The Huskers made plenty of late comebacks just to fall short. And yet those comebacks allowed NU to be within one score. To make the game look "close" and offer Frost ammo for why he should be given another chance.
Perhaps to Eberflus' credit, his comments after the Bears' latest close loss were so ludicrous he ran out of rope. Everyone knew he was going to get fired today. And then he was.
Thursday was the last straw for sure, but it was also just the latest addition in what had been a disastrous record for Eberflus in one-score games. In fact, According to The Associated Press, 221 coaches have had 20 or more career games decided by 7 points or fewer. Eberflus’ .227 win percentage (5-17) in those games ranks 221st.
Eberflus has five wins in one-score games you say? Why, that's the exact win total as one Scott Frost while with the Nebraska football team. The NU coach had a few more heartbreakers, going 5-22 but the ineptitude in close games is there for both men. And it ended both of their stays with their respective teams.
