Ex-Nebraska football head coach surfaces as top candidate for FAU opening
It should come as no surprise that with the all the head coach opening this fall, that former Nebraska football head coach Scott Frost might get mentioned for at least one of the openings. However, for a program like Florida Atlantic, a program that needs someone who is willing to put in 90 hour weeks in order to turn a moribund team around, Frost doesn’t seem like much of a fit.
Despite that, the former Huskers quarterback and coach was mentioned in a recent roundup of top candidates for the job by On3. More than that, Frost is considered one of the “top” candidates for the job.
Of course, it’s not clear how serious this list is, as the former Nebraska football coach is on a list with former NFL linebacker Ray Lewis, who has no real coaching experience. It’s possible FAU is looking for a splash hire to try and rejuvenate the program.
Ex-Nebraska football coach is at the top of FAU candidate list
On3 actually lays out a decent case as to why Frost might be the guy for the Owls.
“The former Nebraska quarterback was fired from his head coaching job with the Cornhuskers in 2022 but resurfaced this fall as an analyst with the Los Angeles Rams. Before his stint back in Lincoln, Scott Frost built his name as the Oregon offensive coordinator and UCF head coach. In his second year with the Knights, he led them to a 13-0 record and was one of the top coaching candidates in the nation. He finished his five years at Nebraska with a 16–31 record, failing to revive the program. But Frost has a proven track record of winning and recruiting in Florida, helping establish UCF as a top Group of Five program. Scott Frost’s athletic director at UCF was Danny White, the brother of FAU athletic director Brian White. Frost wants to return to the college game. Will FAU be the starting point?”
The list of candidates at this point is long. It’s also varied. It still feels like Scott Frost is going to need to prove himself as a coordinator somewhere first. If the ex-Nebraska football head man really wants to restart his career, he can’t take a shortcut. Whether he knows that or not, is unclear.
