The Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team has been having some serious fun of late. It’s been great to see when you consider how much of the focus on John Cook’s squad in the months leading up to the season was on some ugly things that went down over the winter, spring and summer.

It’s even nicer to see because after an up and down start to the 2024 campaign, it looked like things might be in trouble after a big upset loss to SMU. But since that loss, and after a rather impressively angry tirade by head coach John Cook, things have been better both on and off the court it would appear.

On the court, the Huskers have gone on a tear and have beat down some of the best teams in the country. Off the court, Cook has been having a little bit of social media fun with Harper Murray and her teammates. That included the long-promised reveal on Tik Tok as to how Cook got the black eye.

In a demonstration of just how much fun things appear to be in Lincoln these days, Cook and Murray appeared in the new video.

Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball hilariously explains black eye

“Okay,” Murray began. “So like a week ago at practice, me and coach got into a fight because …why did we get into a fight?” She asked Cook.

“Because Harper was being a brat,” the Huskers head coach responded.

“Why?” Harper said smiling.

“She wasn't listening,” her coach replied. “But then Merritt came in to defend her.  Next thing you know, there's some pushing, shoving, and I get decked.”

Then came the punchline, as well as the real reason why the black eye happened.

“Okay, and then I kicked his knee and now he has a knee brace.  His knee's all swollen,” Murray explained before finally shifting to the truth.

“You can tell them what really happened.  We didn't get into a fight.  I didn't punch him.  I didn’t kick his knee.”

“I’m just kidding,” Cook added. “ I’m going to say one thing.  It ain’t easy being a cowboy and a coach.  It’s all contact, full go all the time.”

When the Nebraska Cornhuskers star informed Cook he needed to give more context than that, he said that was enough. However it appears the mystery of the black eye is solved and has more to do with his ranching and his horses than anything else.
