Nebraska football fans might not be all that familiar with new quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas, but he’s hardly an unknown among the coaching community. In fact, those who know of his work, are quite complimentary.

Reports started circulating social media on Tuesday morning that Thomas was the Huskers’ new QB coach. Not long after that, just what kind of coach the new Cornhuskers assistant has been started floating to the surface.

For starters, he’s one of the most veteran coaches on the offensive side of the ball for the Nebraska football program. While he most recently was an offensive assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, his coaching career started all the way back in 2004.

Where his coaching career first crossed paths with Matt Rhule was in 2015, when he took the quarterbacks coach job with Temple. The following season he was promoted to offensive coordinator as well as QBs coach. In 2017 he made the jump with Rhule to the Baylor Bears where he spent three seasons as Co-offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach.

It’s his time there that brought high praise from another Power 5 offensive coordinator on Tuesday. Jeff Nixon was co-OC with Thomas at Baylor and told the Omaha World-Herald that he has no doubt Thomas will do well in Lincoln.

“He coaches the quarterbacks hard, I do know that,” Nixon said. “We pretty much always had good quarterback play. He has a high standard, is very detailed and doesn’t let anything slide. He makes sure the quarterback knows what we’re trying to get out of every play.”

Nebraska football coach gets high praise and has plenty of experience

After a year in which the Nebraska football quarterbacks led the nation in turnovers, it’s clear that head coach Matt Rhule wasn’t content entering 2024 with the status quo.

With the Steelers’ season finally over, Thomas was available. The move cements rumors that have been been floating all over the internet for weeks.

The hiring of Glenn Thomas also allows offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield to go back to the position he was originally supposed to coach, as he’ll also tutor the tight ends.
