Despite the fact that Adrian Martinez didn’t finish his career with the Nebraska football team, it’s impossible not to root for him. The man who started for four seasons in Lincoln in the Scott Frost era has been working hard to show he belongs in the NFL since finishing his college days at Kansas State.

Until this week, he’s had a couple of different shots. There was some thought he might be able to do it with the Detroit Lions. However, when the 2023 season arrived, the Lions cut him and didn’t have a spot for him on their practice squad.

This year, he gave it another go, after winning the MVP award in the UFL. He took a job with the New York Jets and once again played well enough in the preseason to look like he might get it done. Then he was cut and it looked like it was back to the drawing board.

But then, the former Nebraska football quarterback signed a deal to be on the Jets’ practice squad.

Ex-Nebraska football QB1 lands himself an NFL job

Martinez is one of 17 players the Jets signed to their practice squad. That despite the fact that his numbers with New York wasn’t all that impressive this preseason.

Martinez threw for 270 yards, 0 touchdowns, and one interception. He completed 53.2 percent of his passes in four games. He also showed that he could do some damage on the ground.

His mobility is almost certainly the biggest reason the former Nebraska football star got a job on the Jets. Now he just needs to keep showing he can do something that the franchise believes will aid them on the actual, active roster. He has at least taken the first, important step.
