It is officially that time of year when former Nebraska football players find out whether or not they’ve made an NFL roster. Unfortunately for Adrian Martinez and several others, the answer to that question is, “no.”

It’s got to be especially hard for Martinez. The ex-Husker and Kansas State quarterback spent the pre-season seeing quite a bit of time on the field for the second straight year. In 2023, it was for the Detroit Lions. This summer it was the New York Jets.

And yet, after the one-time Nebraska football star played a ton in the preseason, he was cut when the Jets had to get down to 53 players. For now at least, he’s not even being allowed to land on the team’s practice squad.

Martinez threw for 270 passing yards in the preseason, with one interception and no touchdowns. One has to think he might have believed he’d make the Jets considering they let him play so often.

There’s also the fact that he showed he can be a valuable asset to at least one professional league when he was this spring’s UFL MVP. However, he’s going to have to go back to the drawing board one more time.

Martinez was far from the only former Husker who is looking for new teams:

  • The Eagles released offensive lineman Nick Gates.
  • Wide receiver Samori Toure recorded five receptions for 53 yards in the preseason but was waived by the Packers.
  • The Broncos waived safety Omar Brown.
  • Quinton Newsome was waived by the Broncos as well.
  • Finally, The Raiders waived safety Phalen Sanford, leaving leaving Nebraska football without a rookie currently on an NFL 53-man roster.
