The weekend of June 14 has long been marked as a big recruiting period for Nebraska football. Now that it’s here, it appears there was some serious success, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

While nothing is official yet, the Huskers look like they’ve landed at least one commitment. And while news is still trickling out, the smart money is on NU landing a 4-star defensive linemen out of Texas.

The Nebraska football team had several visitors in town but there were few who were more important to their push to wake the sleeping giant than Malcolm Simpson. And it’s possible they got their man, if the tea leaves are being read correctly.

Nebraska football coaches signal they landed a big fish

Things moved fast on Saturday evening. First, there was the tweet from defensive line coach Terrance Knighton. The man known as Pot Roast has a habit of cluiing in Husker fans when the team has landed a recruit.

On Saturday, it involved a gif showing Denzel Washington looking at his watch. The meaning was clear. While nothing was public yet, someone had given a pledge to NU.

Not long after that. Like within minutes, On3’s Bryan Munson made a prediction that Nebraska would eventually land Malcolm Simpson.

It’s not hard to connect the dots when it comes to the 4-star defensive lineman out of Hitchcock, Texas. Especially when he tweets things like this:

While the Cornhuskers have been looking like a front runner for a while now, it looks like they’ve gone from front runner to the winner of the race. If Simpson does make it official in the next few hours or days, it would be a massive get for Knighton, head coach Matt Rhule and the rest of the staff.

Simpson has offers from USC, Texas A&M, Houston, Baylor and a host of others. But Nebraska football could be ramping up commitments for June.  And with this weekend still not over, and June 21 another big push, Rhule and company could be quite happy by the beginning of July.
