It’s pretty clear that Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule is following the blueprint for a rebuild that he followed at Temple and Baylor. The key part of the approach is all about getting as many athletes as possible in a recruiting class and then sort out where they’ll play later.

That approach appears to be working the last two years. Rhule has had quite a bit of success. The Huskers look like a front runner for the best “athlete” in the 2025 class in Michael Terry.

The Nebraska football team is now in the lead for another promising player, Mekhi Nelson. While he has shown his talent as a running back in high school, there are indications that he could excel in other positions once he joins the team in Lincoln. Recent speculations suggest that he is likely to choose the capital city as his future destination.

Nebraska football running ahead for talented running back

Nelson is a 3-star back who is a bit of an under-the-radar player. Now 247Sports Brian Dohn has entered a very solid Crystal Ball for the Huskers.

It’s also possible that the Cornhuskers might have their 11th commit of the 2025 class by the time Monday rolls around.

Mekhi Nelson's journey to the Nebraska football team began with an unofficial visit earlier this month. His impressive athleticism and measurable skills caught the attention of the coaching staff, including Matt Rhule. As a result, Nelson has been invited for an official visit this weekend, a clear sign of the team's wanting to close the deal.

During this visit, it seems likely that Nebraska will get a commitment from the versatile athlete who could be reminiscent of Wandale Robinson. Nelson is a strong running back, but he can also do damage out in the flat as a receiver.

The most interesting aspect of this visit and what will almost certainly be a commitment is that Nelson would officially become the third running back in the class for the Nebraska football team. Hence the versatility and how important that is for Rhule and company.
