Ex-Nebraska football corner back seen as surprise NFL practice squad addition
Former Nebraska football cornerback Quinton Newsome will get a second NFL opportunity with the Denver Broncos after his first opportunity didn’t go all that well. In fact, Newsome was released by Denver earlier in the week when the team had to get down to 53 people on its roster.
Now Newsome has been signed by the Broncos to be on their practice squad. That means he’ll be given the chance to practice against the NFL team during the week. He’ll also, should he impress the NFL squad enough, be eligible to be activated off the practice squad at any time during the season.
Back when the former Nebraska football star signed with the NFL squad right after the NFL draft, plenty of analysts believed It was a seemingly a good landing spot for Newsome, in part because the cornerback had a private top 30 visit with the Broncos in early April.
Ex-Nebraska football corner gets second shot at NFL life
With the announcement that Denver is bringing Newsome back to the practice squad, SBNation writers made it clear they knew he wouldn’t make the roster, but his rejoining the practice squad was a bit of a surprise.
“Newsome was not a guy we had on our initial 17-man Broncos’ practice squad projection, but he showed enough in training camp and the preseason to earn a spot. One of reasons is that he didn’t have elite speed necessary at the NFL level, but the caveat with a lack of athleticism at a specific position is technique. He must be improving his overall game to make up for whatever people like us think might be lacking in other areas. Good on him for keeping that opportunity heading into the regular season.”
Now the former Nebraska football star will get the chance to prove doubters wrong.
