After the loss to Illinois, there are plenty of Nebraska football fans who are more than a little annoyed. Some are even losing hope that the Huskers will go bowling.

That, of course, is ridiculous, considering NU needs just three more wins in order to get to the postseason for the first time since 2016. Granted, there is no guarantee they’ll get there, especially since the Big Ten schedule is looking a bit tougher than it was just a few weeks ago.

However, if there are any Nebraska football fans who think the season is over thanks to a loss to a Top 25 team, look no further than the latest bowl projections from USA Today. In those projections, the Huskers are going to face off against an old Big 8 foe.

In the Music City Bowl, NU is projected to reignite that rivalry by taking on the SEC’s Oklahoma Sooners. The matchup is certainly one that would spark quite a few eyes onto the game considering it’s going to be quite a while before the rivalry can be sparked up again in the regular season.

Nebraska football faces off against OU in latest bowl projections

The two programs have met 88 times since 1921, with Oklahoma holding the lead in the series all-time at 47-38-3. The schools last met in 2022 as part of a home-and-home series. Oklahoma came out on top in the 2022 matchup in Lincoln, 49-14 in what was interim head coach Mickey Joseph’s first game after the firing of Scott Frost.

While the Nebraska football team had dreams of making the playoffs before the loss to Illinois, a bowl game will be more than good enough in Matt Rhule’s second season. And if the Music City Bowl is where the Cornhuskers are headed, it will be plenty fun.
