Nebraska football’s Blackshirts get fantastic news ahead of fall camp

The Huskers thought they were starting the season down a man on defense, that may not be the case.

When transfer defensive back Blye Hill went down with an injury in the Nebraska football spring game, there were concerns he might miss most, or all of the regular season. It turns out, things have gone better than anyone should have expected.

Matt Rhule addressed Hill’s injury during his first official press conference of fall camp. And he shed light on what was even better news than what believed about Hill

Earlier this summer, Rhule said that he believed the DB would be back after the first few weeks of the season. Now he could indeed be back for the game against UTEP.

“He’s trending in a really good spot, much better than I thought he would be,” Rhule said. “I thought it would be three games into the season.”

That doesn’t mean that the Huskers are putting all their eggs in the Blye Hill basket. Even if he does come back in time to play the season opener, he might not be 100 percent.

NU planned this offseason accordingly. They went out and got USC defensive back Ceyair Wright. Now it appears Wright and Hill will be fighting it out for a starting corner spot opposite Tommi Hill.

Other Huskers remain in the mix on the edge. The coach also named redshirt freshman Jeremiah Charles and junior safety Malcolm Hartzog — who has corner experience — as other candidates for snaps. Freshmen Dwight Bootle and Mario Buford are others with upside at the position.

It’s a good problem to have, especially in the wake of the Blye Hill news. It seems like it’s been a while since Nebraska football had too many guys for any position.
