The Nebraska football team has had an up-and-down couple of months regarding recruiting. While they’ve landed several of their top targets, they’ve also missed out on more.

Obviously, such is the way of recruiting, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt when a prospect the Huskers were once seen as the front-runner for goes somewhere else. Especially when that somewhere else is a Big Ten rival.

Such was the case of Alai Kalaniuvalu, who announced his commitment to the Oregon Ducks on Wednesday. That commitment means the Nebraska football team is officially o-fer on its Bishop Gorman offensive line targets this session. And it also likely means NU is done recruiting offensive linemen for the 2025 class.

Nebraska football loses out on yet another Bishop Gorman target

To add insult to injury, Kalaniuvalu is headed to the Oregon Ducks. One of the newest Big Ten teams (at least when it’s official on August 2) is assembling quite the recruiting class. It appears they’re headed for a Top 5 finish.

There is one more roadblock to overcome as the Huskers try to return to something resembling glory. They are moving towards returning to a bowl game and then being a team that goes to a bowl game every year again.

"The culture was big for me and I like what's going on at Oregon right now," Kalaniuvalu told 247Sports shortly after his commitment. "I love what they are building up and the environment — they all have the winning mentality. It's going to be a great spot the next few years and hopefully we'll be able to win a national championship.”

With the loss of the 4-star interior offensive lineman, the Huskers are in a bit of a holding pattern with 15 commitments in the 2025 class. The Nebraska football team is also struggling a bit compared to last cycle as they’re ranked 36th according to 247Sports, compared to a finish inside the Top 25 for the 2024 cycle.
