Did the Nebraska football team add another running back to its 2024 class? There’s some debate as to whether that officially happened on Sunday afternoon. However, should Mekhi Nelson turn out to actually be a commit to the Huskers, it looks as though EJ Barthel and company got another body to fill out a room that keeps getting better.

What is known is that Nelson isn’t denying on social media that he committed. And at least one recruiting site is already listing him as a member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The problem is that not every website is in agreement on whether to announce the apparent commitment.

The Sunda drama when On3 marked Nelson a commitment. However, as of the writing of this article, he hasn’t announced he’s picked a school yet. That led to at least one analyst from another site, Tim Verghese of Rivals to call out On3 without calling them out by name.

“Commitment announcements are once in a lifetime opportunities for these young men,” Verghese wrote on Twitter. “We’re always going to be respectful of a player’s timeline and wishes as to not take away from that moment, we’d rather be accurate and ethical than ‘first’”

It’s worth noting that the analyst appeared to take issue with the timing of the change made by On3. Not that it was inaccurate.

For his part, Nelson has just been telling Husker fans to follow him on social media while posting pictures of him in an NU uniform.

Should the Connecticut back officially be a Husker, he would reclassify to the 2024 class. That means the 3-star recruit would be able to join NU immediately and start practicing once fall camp kicks off on July 31.

It would also mean that the Nebraska football team suddenly has a logjam at running back. The Huskers brought in Donte Dowdell through the portal because of how thin the position was looking this winter. Now, it appears there’s going to be an honest to goodness battle for playing time this season.
