Former Nebraska Cornhuskers pitching star Cade Povich has turned into a Baltimore Orioles pitching star this year as he continues a rookie season that is only getting better the better feel he gets for what it takes to be at this level.

One step towards “getting better” was a big milestone. Povich won his first Major Leaguge Baseball game in his fifth start for the Orioles. While getting the win is obviously a big milestone for the former Husker hurler, it’s an even better sign how far he’s driven his ERA down and seen a rise in his strikeout numbers since his first, rather rough start against the Toronto Bluejays.

The ex-Nebraska Cornhuskers star notched his first win in a 6-5 victory over a tough Texas Rangers roster. Even better is that he left the game with a 6-2 lead and saw the bullpen hold on to give him his first win.

Povich has been a bit of a victim of the pen in his last few starts, but they were able to make the lead stick on Saturday night.

Povich wasn’t exactly unhittable, in his latest start, lasting 5 innings and allowing 5 hits, while striking out 3 and allowing one home run. And while he wasn’t dominant he has shown that he’s able to keep teams off the scoreboard much more effectively since his first start.

On June 6, Povich made his Major League debut and lasted 5.1 innings while allowing 6 earned runs and getting handed the loss.

However, in his last four games, he’s posted a combined 2.56 ERA and seems to be making a statement that he needs to remain in the rotation for the long haul.

With months to go in the season for a contending team, it’s certainly going to see Cade Povich continue to represent the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the big league level.
