The Nebraska football team added a fourth quarterback to its roster on Thursday in the form of NAIA veteran Jalyn Gramstad. The good news here is that Gramstad is joining the program immediately as a grad transfer so he’ll be able to workout with teammates and be 100 percent ready for fall camp.
That fall camp starts in just over a month, on July 31. The question of course is whether or not he’s going to get a feel for a much higher level of football that quickly.
If Gramstad does adjust quickly, there are some wrinkles that stand out for the Nebraska football team and what head coach Matt Rhule and company could do with the roster. Right at the top of the list is give the team more flexibility at the quarterback position.
Is Heinrich Haarberg moving around the field or Nebraska football?
Since Rhule and company got to town, there’s been talk about possibly moving Heinrich Haarberg to tight end. That didn’t happen last year because he was still needed under center. With Dylan Raiola, Daniel Kaelin and now Gramstad in the fold, it’s possible the move could come this year.
There’s been plenty of drooling over the big bodied athlete being TE2. Unless the other quarterbacks look especially bad in the early parts of fall camp, it’s going to be hard for the Husker coaches to avoid temptation.
Jalyn Gramstad offers a multi-talented quarterback to the mix
Known for his elite throwing skills, Gramstad is considered an "elite" passer by Nebraska's coaching staff. He’s also a very good runner. His versatility and ability to adapt quickly to different offensive schemes make him a valuable asset.
There’s even been some early talk that he’s more than just depth and could actually give Raiola a run for his money as far as starting quarterback goes.
Postgrad camp keeps offering options
For the second straight year, the Nebraska football team pulled a couple of players out of its postgrad camp that it wants to add to the roster. Also, for the second straight year, they got a quarterback out of the deal. But its wide receiver Hayes Miller that’s a really interesting wildcard.
