The Nebraska women's flag football team is still in its infancy, but the Huskers are growing fast. On Friday, NU announced it added another weapon to a growing stable in the form of defensive back and wide receiver Jaylani Palmer.
The Las Vegas, Nevada, Shadow Ridge senior athlete showed her versatility this past season, playing quarterback and wide receiver and playing a major role on the defensive side of the ball as well. It's unlikely she'll see much time at QB, considering the Huskers already have one of the best signal callers in flag football in Ariana Akey.
Jaylani Palmer gives Nebraska women’s flag football another versatile athlete to build around
While her role on offense for Nebraska will likely be limited to catching passes, Palmer did just about everything for the Shadow Ridge Mustangs this past season. The senior totaled 3,610 all-purpose yards and 50 total touchdowns. On defense, she was a ball hawk and tallied 23 interceptions along with 51 flag pulls.
Palmer joins a growing stable of offensive and defensive standouts. In addition to Akey at quarterback, the Huskers also added Saylor Swansen, Sara Walker, and Emmi Merhi earlier this spring.
Jaylani Palmer adds to Nebraska women’s flag football momentum under Liz Sowers
Near the end of February, Nebraska - the first Power 4 program to have a full sponsored women's flag football team - hired famed twin sisters Katie and Liz Sowers. Liz will be the head coach, while Katie will take on an associate head coaching role.
The Sowers sisters have worked together for a while now and have led Kansas' Ottawa University to five consecutive NAIA national championships. They'll officially join the Huskers on June 1.
With typically 25 players on a women's flag football roster, Nebraska still has plenty of additions to make. They'll play an exhibition season in the spring of 2027 before kicking off their official inaugural season in the spring of 2028.
