Not only did Nebraska make history in becoming the first Power Conference program to announce Women's Flag Football as a varsity sport, but it's clear that AD Troy Dannen isn't doing it halfway. Earlier this week, Dannen announced he'd found the program's new head coach in Liz Sowers and associate head coach in Katie Sowers.

The Sowers sisters are twins who have worked together for a while now and have led Kansas' Ottawa University to five consecutive NAIA national championships. The sisters will finish out the season with Ottawa before officially starting at Nebraska on June 1, 2026.

"We are thrilled to bring Liz and Katie Sowers to Lincoln to build our women’s flag football program," Nebraska's AD said in a statement. "Together they have built a championship program at the NAIA level and have experienced success working with national teams. They have a great vision for what flag football can become at the University of Nebraska and also understand the potential for the sport and the opportunities it will provide for young women across the collegiate landscape."

Liz and Katie Sowers leave Ottawa for Nebraska women’s flag football

Dannen and Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule have been leading the way to get the Women's Flag Football program up and running quickly. He wants to make sure that NU is one of the best in the country when it starts competing for National Titles in 2028.

Part of that approach was being among the first to make an offer to 2028 quarterback prospect Makena Cook. Rhule traveled to California to make the offer in person. The young QB was the MaxPreps California Junior of the Year this past fall after tying the state lead with 112 passing touchdowns to go along with 7,083 yards while completing 74% of her passes.

Now that Liz and Katie Sowers are on board, they'll officially take over leading the Nebraska Women's Flag Football program this summer.
