While the Nebraska volleyball team has been rolling right along, Dani Busboom Kelly’s program is at a level where starting the season 13-0 is almost a ho-hum situation. What matters more right now is keeping the team relatively healthy and at full strength when the matches really start counting in the NCAA Tournament.
On that note, the Huskers’ head coach gave the fanbase some very good news on Tuesday night. Outside hitter Terraya Sigler isn’t just back and playing, but is 100% and prepared to play for the rest of the season.
Busboom Kelly shared the news on her weekly radio show and added that Sigler will be “full go” for Thursday’s match against Penn State. That’s good news for the rest of the season, especially as the team prepares to face one of the best teams in the Big Ten.
Sigler suffered an ankle injury while slipping in the September 23 match against Missouri. She left the court in pain, missed the Rutgers match, then returned briefly in the Ohio State match, finishing with four digs. Her injury in the Missouri match was especially ironic, since it was a continuation in Lincoln of an event that was supposed to take place at Wrigley Field.
Dani Busboom Kelly says Teraya Sigler is 100% for Nebraska volleyball at Penn State
The Big Ten canceled the Wrigley match because the humidity made the court too slick to play on.
In Sigler’s absence, junior Skyler Pierce had two kills vs. Missouri, four against Rutgers and seven vs. Ohio State. Pierce can also play right-side hitter in relief of Virginia Adriano.
The top-ranked Nebraska volleyball team heads to PSU and Maryland this weekend. During her appearance on her show, Busboom Kelly said this road trip comes at just the right time because the Huskers are playing better than they were at the start of the season.
“A little more training time, which is always good,” Busboom Kelly said on the Huskers Radio Network. “We’re figuring out roles and how we can use everybody appropriately. I think everybody’s gotten more in the groove, coaches and players.”
Busboom Kelly said that the 9-3 Nittany Lions are “potentially” the best team her team has faced so far this season. That’s quite a statement considering who NU has already beaten this season. The Huskers swept No. 8 Texas in Las Vegas and also beat Baylor (No. 21) and North Carolina (No. 25) earlier this season. If Penn State has an advantage, it’s that the Huskers haven’t played on the road much this year. Even when they have, they’ve played in front of mostly friendly crowds.
It almost feels like the Nebraska volleyball coach hopes Penn State will give them a true test. “You can’t guarantee a tough game just by the name on the front of the jersey,” Busboom Kelly said. “Some teams are going to play great, some aren’t going to play great.”
