Nebraska softball's WCWS run in danger of being derailed by 'Will Compton Curse'

Considering just how drama-filled the Nebraska softball team’s win over Arkansas on Thursday night was, some Husker fans could be excused if they woke up feeling like this crew might just be a team of destiny. However, that still doesn’t excuse Will Compton, a former Nebraska football player turned NFL star and now podcaster, for his extremely premature celebration of the Women’s College World Series title.

To refresh everyone’s memory, the Cornhuskers got a big 10th-inning win over the Razorbacks. But with just one round down in the WCWS, Rhonda Revelle’s squad still has a long road to the national title. Unfortunately, now that Compton has publicly thrown his support behind this group, history indicates they’re about to hit a brick wall of fate.

On Friday morning, Compton drew a quick backlash from Nebraska fans after posting a celebratory message centered on believing the Women’s College World Series was over. “What a time to be a Cornhusker,” he wrote on Twitter. “Congratulations to @HuskerSoftball and thank you for allowing me to wake up a National Champion.”

“Will, if you jinx this, I'm worried that you just can't watch another Husker sport again. It's just been too weird that once you recognize teams, they start losing,” one follower wrote.

Will Compton Curse has Nebraska softball fans nervous during WCWS title push

The former Nebraska football legend is well known for his exploits in Memorial Stadium and for building a solid career at the professional level after leaving Lincoln. These days, he’s also known as someone who - far too often - bestows the “Will Compton Curse” on the NU programs he throws his weight behind.

“Still time to delete before everyone wakes up, Will,” another wrote.

There were also plenty of memes, some of which denounced the former Nebraska football star. Some were trying desperately to clean up the Will Compton Curse and make sure it didn’t actually touch the Nebraska softball team. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how powerful the jinx really is.

The curse was born after he predicted several big wins for the Nebraska football team, only to see them defeated soundly. However, with the volleyball, basketball, baseball, and softball teams all having deep runs into the postseason this past year, Husker fans become nervous whenever the ex-Blackshirt takes notice of the success.

Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of people who are even more worried now that the Will Compton Curse could completely derail a run through the WCWS since he already declared them the champs. In the sporting world, doing such a thing is tempting fate in a fashion rarely seen. It’s one thing to predict a game is “over” before it’s officially over. It’s another thing entirely to pop champagne over a title when there’s still a long road to the actual big victory.

Once responses started pouring in,, correctly pointing out that the Huskers hadn’t won the whole thing yet, he posted two more times. The first seemed to indicate that he was hoping putting the statement out into the universe would make it happen. This especially had NU fans coming for him.
