When Isaiah Mozee was moved from wide receiver to running back in fall camp, it was expected he'd get quite a few touches because he can both carry and catch the ball. However, the freshman ended up getting just three snaps against Cincinnati.
Things could change in Week 2 against the Akron Zips in no small part because the Huskers have a few guys ahead of him on the depth chart banged up. There's wide receiver Janiran Bonner, who is out for the year, and there's Jacory Barney, who is expected to play but is still feeling the effects of an ankle injury against the Bearcats.
How Isaiah Mozee could step up with Nebraska football’s injuries on offense
During the weekly press conference ahead of the Akron Zips game, Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule made it clear that he sees Mozee getting a "unique role" on offense this week.
Unsurprisingly, he didn't go into detail about what that role is supposed to be. However, Mozee can catch the ball out of the backfield or just line up in the slot. He can take over as a backup running back or step into Bonner's spot.
The biggest question is just how significant the "unique role" will be against Akron. With Bonner out for the rest of the season, the Huskers are unlikely to want to show off what they have up their sleeve against one of the weaker opponents they'll face all season.
On the other hand, the Nebraska football team will want to see how the freshman utility man can handle himself in game action. This will certainly be something to keep an eye on in Saturday night's tilt.
